Intro

There are many books and advice on managing toddlers with eating problems of one sort or another. This book provides information on what happens in the first year so that each baby’s eating is understood and parents know why eating is progressing as it does. Each baby is different so in a way each is fussy

Key words to be introduced: FUSSY BABIES, BABY FOOD, BABY NUTRITION, HEALTHY EATING, PICKY EATERS, EXTREME FOOD REFUSAL, BABY-LED WEANING

Are You Food Sensitive? e-book

Why mums should read this book:

To be updated

  • Chap 1 IOS has many part need an overview
  • Chap 2 New idea of eating development helps understanding of the whole process and how individual babies differ
  • Chap 3 Food sensitivity does exist. Don’t just put up with the symptoms. Read Is your baby food sensitive chapter
  • Chap 4 SS does exist and it is very helpful to know about.

Introduction of Solids [IOS] has many parts
Introduction of solids has many parts so people can come to it from different directions – from all that is involved in breast or bottle feeding, whether there is allergy or intolerance, readiness for solids, the importance of nutrition, and others such as social development.

An overview is important
It is important to first see introduction of solids in a general way and then look at the detail of these particular different orientations.

Sometimes problems occur
Usually everything goes well but not always. We all enjoy noticing a baby’s development towards learning to walk. Why can introduction of solids be so complicated? It is because babies develop at their own pace in their own way. Some want solids early and sail through the whole process without a problem. Others seem to have small or large problems all the way along. The doctor may reassure you that there is no medical problem but there are still hassles at feeding time.

Eating development is described in detail in this book
The idea of understanding eating development as a developmental process with many parts has not been described elsewhere. It is important as it affects any of the discussions about all of the other important aspects of feeding babies, whether they are managing breast feeding, allergy, or nutrition. Understanding how babies learn about new tastes, textures, thickness and all other aspects of food helps with all these other aspects of learning about eating. Most parents do realise that introduction of solids can be complicated, even frustrating! Understanding eating development shows how to manage it!

Other important topics covered in this book
As well as eating development, there are two other important topics covered in this book but largely neglected in IOS information. They are food sensitivity and supersensitivity. They do exist and each needs to be understood or recognised. Where they apply to a baby action can be taken.

The detail of breast or bottle feeding, allergy, nutrition, or prevention of overweight are not covered here. Other Resources you can also use are noted in Chap 1.

Dietitians are the health professionals with regard to all aspects of nutrition in infants.

Fussy babies does not mean fussy eaters
The topics covered in this book are also important as they address many reasons why so many children are fussy eaters and how this can be prevented. I am an Introduction of Solids Consultant as a dietitian who has had a unique experience of working with people who do have IOS problems.

Introduction of solids deserves its own emphasis
Just as giving a baby its best start during the first year, preferably with breast milk, deserves emphasis, so too does the development of adequate eating habits, which begin in the second six months. Careful attention to introduction of solids provides a good basis for eating for the rest of the baby’s life.

About the author

Joan Breakey is one of the few dietitions in the world whom has specialised in the area of Food Sensitivity. She has been a practising Dietitian, Home Economist and Teacher for forty years. In 1975 she began her first work on Diet and Hyperactivity, investigating the effects of the Feingold diet on children's behaviour. For the last thirty years Joan has been publishing and presenting the results of her on-going research in this area..

She has worked as the Adviser in Nutrition and Dietetics to the Department of Health in Queensland (Australia) and as a Dietitian in Community Child Mental Health in the Division of Youth, Welfare and Guidance.

In 1983 Joan continued her research, conducting clinical research with families using dietary treatment for behaviour, learning and activity problems. In 1991 she published the results of a follow-up study of over five hundred families.

As well she has worked with hundreds of families in private practice investigating the role of diet not just in behaviour, but also in treatment of physical, allergic and food intolerance symptoms such as eczema, asthma, hay-fever, migraine and abdominal pains.

Food sensitive people are often those who are very sensitive to smells, strong tastes, bright lights, particular noises, and textured clothes. Through her work with hundreds of food sensitive people Joan can give a picture of how sensitive they are. Download the FREE Super Sensitivity & Childhood Trauma (PDF, 327 KB) article to see how sensitive they can be and how using the Diet Detective Investigation method you can see how diet can help

In 1995 she received a Master of Applied Science degree for her research in this field. Copies of this thesis are available.
