Feeding babies - it's all supposed to happen naturally isn't it?We all enjoy watching a baby’s development towards learning to walk. So why are other natural progressions like feeding and the introduction of solids sometimes so complicated and frustrating? It is because babies develop at their own pace in their own way. Some want solids early and sail through the whole process without a problem. Others seem to have small or large problems all the way along including:
Usually everything goes well but when it doesn't many parents look to friends and family for ideas and if you're still struggling the next step is typically your General Practitioner. When the doctor reassures you that there's no medical problem that's when things can get very frustrating because there's still hassles at feeding time and the baby is still distressed but you don't have answers. Some mothers "feel the wonderful bond with my baby is threatened, I feel like it's wearing me down" or "All my hopes of an enjoyable babyhood for the baby and I have dwindled."
Fussy Babies provides you with information on what happens in the first year so that each baby’s eating is understood and parents know why eating is progressing as it does. Mums should read Fussy Babies to:
Introduction of Solids - Have the overall pictureThe process of Introducing Solids includes many parts. Including :
Fussy Babies explains these concepts in an easy to understand way. Starting with exploring introduction of solids in a general way and then going into the detail of each of these particular different areas. Eating development NEW INFORMATIONFussy Babies includes new information not available elsewhere on eating development as a developmental process with many parts Eating Development in all babies includes learning about new tastes, textures, thickness and all other aspects of food. Understanding the Eating Development process helps explain all the ways babies can differ from each other in just what factor in the food they may have trouble managing, depending on how fast they are learning about food. If eating problems are seen as ‘eating delay’ then they can be solved. Most parents realise that introduction of solids can be complicated, even frustrating! Understanding eating development shows how to manage it! Food Sensitivity & SupersensitivityAs well as eating development, there are two other important topics covered in this book but largely neglected in Introduction of Solids information. They are food sensitivity and supersensitivity. Read Fussy Babies to answer the question “Is your baby food sensitive?” and to manage food sensitivity investigation at the same time as managing all the other issues with the introduction of solids. Download a FREE chapter to see the content pages for all the detail in this useful book! Supersensitivity dos exist and needs to understood and recognised. Then action can be taken to ensuring that the baby's comfort is managed. Reader reviews"I have just finished reading Fussy Babies. It is very interesting and I enjoyed reading it. It is practical and easy to read. I have been using the tips and ideas in chapter 2 as I introduce solids to Lincoln. Each spoonful of food I keep thinking of how you described babies as food gourmets. I watch eagerly for his reaction to see if my cooking has passed the test of his expectations. I like how you have written the chapter by breaking it down into sections and providing tips, how to encourage development and the what are reasonable milestones." Helen Peel, Dietitian and mother I found the chapters good, and easy to read. As a mum it helps me to know I'm not the only one going through this. None of my local circle of mums have had to go through the full-on diet for the sake of their babies. Mother, Queensland, Australia "My only comment is 'why didn't someone write this book earlier?' I think it's going to be useful for dietitians as well as mothers. Most people and health professionals don't realise how the slightest change in texture or flavour or temperature can make such a big difference to acceptance by the baby. And I know many or most mothers wouldn't think that those small changes would make such a big difference to acceptance. It's also reassuring for parents who have fussy babies." |

About the authorJoan Breakey is one of the few dietitians in the world who has a lifetime of specialisation in the area of Food Sensitivity. She has been a practicing Dietitian, Home Economist and Teacher for forty years. In 1975 she began her first work on Diet and Hyperactivity, investigating the effects of the Feingold diet on children's behaviour. For the last thirty years Joan has been publishing and presenting the results of her on-going research in this area. She has worked as the Adviser in Nutrition and Dietetics to the Department of Health in Queensland (Australia) and as a Dietitian in Community Child Mental Health in the Division of Youth, Welfare and Guidance. In 1983 Joan continued her research, conducting clinical research with families using dietary treatment for behaviour, learning and activity problems. In 1991 she published the results of a follow-up study of over five hundred families. As well she has worked with hundreds of families in private practice investigating the role of diet not just in behaviour, but also in treatment of physical, allergic and food intolerance symptoms such as eczema, asthma, hay-fever, migraine and abdominal pains. Food sensitive people are often those who are very sensitive to smells, strong tastes, bright lights, particular noises, and textured clothes. Through her work with hundreds of food sensitive people Joan can give a picture of how sensitive they are. Using the Diet Detective Investigation method you can see how diet can help In 1995 she received a Master of Applied Science degree for her research in this field.
